The state of Texas recently passed a bill into law that prohibits minors from using indoor tanning facilities. Teens under the age of 16 1/2 are no longer allowed to use indoor tanning beds and those between the ages of 16 1/2 & 18 will be required to have in-person parental consent before being allowed to tan.
The United States Department of Human Health & Services has declared that UV (ultra violet) exposure from both the sun and artificial sources is a known carcinogen (causes cancer). It's estimated that over 2.3 millions teens per year use indoor tanning facilities. Over 1 million new cases of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, will be diagnosed this year and many of these new cases will be teens.
Personally, I applaud Texas for passing this law. People don't seem to realize the danger that indoor tanning poses. I hope that the rest of the United States will follow Texas's example since there are so many safer and healthier alternatives to exposing oneself to UV rays.
Question: What's your opinion on the Texas legislation? Do you think this new law is fair or unfair? Let me know what you think by leaving a comment below. Thanks!

I am concerned the government is getting to involved - parents should have the right to make decisions about their children. Next they will be not allowing children to play soccer without a big umbrella over the field, after all the children will be exposed to the uv light..

I think it's a great idea. Study after study shows that the only benefit that fake-baking has is that it makes you look more bronze for a day or two. Oh yeah! And it gives you cancer!

I agree that this is a great idea and I believe that all other states should follow in Texas' footsteps with this. What I do not understand is why it okay for people over 16.5 to use indoor tanning. Does the UV rays not bother you after a certain age? Outlaw it for everyone!
They now offer mystic tanning. It looks just as good as a real tan, and as far as I know, this has not been proven to cause cancer (yet)!!!

This is indeed a correct move to prevent cancer to sprout at such an early age. Teens are often not well aware of such consequences and hence they can be easy victims of such deadly disease due to artificial tanning .

Thanks to everyone who took a moment to comment!
I agree with all the opinions here. Is government getting too involved? I don't know. Should indoor tanning be banned for everyone? I don't know the answer to that one either.
What I do know is that as a parent myself, I'm pleased by this law that's protecting children from doing harm to themselves since there are many other safer alernatives out there to achieving that "healthy glow".
